Peanut’s journey of hope

Many equines come to Harmony Equine Center through our animal protection partnerships. In July 2025, a large case was brought to our attention out of western Colorado – over 70 horses, including several foals, in desperate need of care.

Peanut arrived at Harmony with these horses, a tiny foal with a painful ulcer in his right eye.

Corneal ulcers can heal on their own, but they can also rupture, leading to complications including vision loss. Quick to action, our team worked to get photos of the eye and monitor the situation. Ultimately believed to be a corneal rupture, we reviewed Peanut’s prognosis with one of our veterinary partners, confirming our suspicion.

Thankfully, this sweet boy’s corneal rupture is now healed.

As a young foal, Peanut also needed to gain weight, and gain weight he did – almost 500 pounds over the last year!

In June, Peanut faced one of his last obstacles – a hernia repair.

Thanks to our partnership with CSU, Peanut’s hernia repair was a hands-on continuing education opportunity for veterinarians to refine their skills through specialized training under the supervision of CSU’s teaching veterinarian, Dr. Bass.

Now that Peanut’s hernia procedure is healed, he is on the road to adoption!

Peanut is a flashy colt. Previously unhandled, our equine trainers worked diligently over the last year to build his confidence and comfort. Peanut is now halter-broke, picks up all four feet for the farrier, and is quickly learning the basics of groundwork. His willingness to learn is only matched by his spunky personality.

Peanut greets trainers and volunteers, eager for the day’s affection. He loves a good grooming session and will never turn down a walk.
