Short-term Volunteer Opportunities at Humane Colorado

Public Service Volunteer Program

The Public Service Volunteer Program offers short-term, behind-the-scenes volunteer opportunities for individuals who want to support Humane Colorado but are unable to commit to our standard six-month volunteer requirement.

What do public service volunteers do?

Public service volunteers support Humane Colorado through essential behind-the-scenes work that helps keep our shelters clean, organized, and ready for animals and staff.

Tasks vary based on current shelter needs and may include:

  • Cleaning and laundry
  • Washing dishes and supplies
  • Organizing donations or storage areas
  • Facilities upkeep and maintenance tasks
  • Event preparation or special projects

If you are interested in a longer-term volunteer role with animal interaction, please apply to our General Volunteer Program or consider fostering a pet in your home.

What are the public service volunteer requirements?

  • Age: Public service volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
  • Time commitment: Public service volunteers must complete at least 24 service hours. This is typically completed over a 1-2 month period, depending on shift availability. This is not a single-day volunteer opportunity.
  • Physical requirements: Volunteers should be comfortable standing for extended periods of time and performing hands-on tasks, which include bending, lifting, scooping, cleaning, and laundry.
  • Onboarding timelines: The onboarding process can take several weeks. We are unable to accommodate expedited turnaround requests.

Is the public service volunteer program right for you?

Public service volunteer opportunities are right for you if you:

  • Are comfortable with a role that does not include direct animal interaction, while still making an impact on their daily lives.
  • Want to support Humane Colorado but cannot commit to six-month commitment for general volunteer opportunities.
  • Do not need court-ordered community service hours.
  • Do not need service hours for school.
