Luna – a sweet, 6-year-old husky and deft escape artist – came to our Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur in March with more than just a tale to tell. Sadly, for her and her owner, Amelia, Luna was suffering from the wounds she had endured from a recent trauma. After sneaking out to a neighbor’s property, Luna was taken by surprise when four other dogs broke through the fence and attacked her hindquarters. Bystanders were fortunately able to save Luna, but she would need immediate care if she were going to live. Amelia rushed her to a local emergency veterinarian, where she received confirmation that Luna would need surgery. “It was heartbreaking, and the extent of the surgery was expensive,” recalled Amelia. Still, she was resolved, wishing nothing more than to comfort her brave girl. Following the procedure, the veterinarian informed Amelia that the healing process would be difficult and that further surgeries and consultations with specialists may be necessary. Not long after, Amelia noticed that Luna’s already bruised skin around her incision was turning black. Knowing she could not afford long-term specialist care, she made an appointment with our CSU Spur animal hospital. Upon examination, our team determined that Luna would need not only another surgery to remove the necrotic tissue but also a series of bandages to protect her tail and the surrounding area. And while it was impossible to predict how long the recovery would take, for the first time in nearly a week, Amelia felt hope. For the next month, Luna returned to our hospital several times for follow-up wound care and bandage changes. In the process, she became a true favorite among our staff. “During one of her last visits, the technician told me that Luna was very loved by everyone,” Amelia said. “I was amazed… I felt the support and knew she was in the right hands.” Today, despite her harrowing experience, Luna is healed and back to being her wild, cuddly self with her canine housemate, Panda. Together, they are Amelia’s beloved perrijas or “dog daughters”. Amelia recently shared, “It has been a blessing to have the support of the veterinary team at CSU Spur. You are all changing people’s lives and saving pets’ lives and spirits.” Share Facebook TikTok Instagram
