Every year, our advocacy team works with Colorado lawmakers to bring new legislation that supports pets and the people who love them. This legislative session, we prioritized increasing access to veterinary care through House Bill 26-1198, which passed and was signed into law last week. This bill allows unused veterinary prescription medications to be donated to shelters and veterinary practices where they can be safely re-prescribed to pet owners in need at no cost. For families facing financial barriers, this new law could mean the difference between delaying treatment and getting the help they need for their pet right away. For shelters and veterinarians, it provides another tool to support the animals and communities we serve every day. Too often, we see pets surrendered to our shelters due to financial stress related to veterinary treatment. House Bill 26-1198 provides a safety net that keeps pets with their people – and that is worth celebrating! We are grateful to our bill sponsors Sen. Lisa Cutter, Sen. Rod Pelton, Asst. Minority Leader Ty Winter, and Rep. Karen McCormick. Thank you to all of the advocates, lawmakers, veterinarians, and organizations who worked to make this possible. Share Facebook TikTok Instagram
