Chiquita, a small but mighty Chihuahua, captured hearts when she recently came through the doors of our new Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur. Just days before, Chiquita was adopted by Jazmin and her two little boys. It didn’t take long for Jazmin to notice a mass under the pup’s right front leg, and, following a friend’s recommendation, she made an appointment for Chiquita at CSU Spur. [Humane Colorado] veterinarians quickly determined Chiquita had not one but three mammary gland masses that needed to be surgically removed. These growths develop more frequently in adult dogs who are either intact (like Chiquita) or spayed later in life. To prevent future pregnancy, pet overpopulation, and further health complications, Chiquita’s mass removal procedure would also need to include a spay. Dr. Rize, a veterinary intern completing her first year of practice at CSU Spur, was the attending doctor for Chiquita’s case. With Spanish translation assistance from one of our bilingual team members, she met with Chiquita’s family and thoughtfully explained her condition. A few days later, Dr. Rize performed Chiquita’s chain mastectomy and spay surgery “on-view” and submitted the tissue from her masses for histopathology testing. To the relief of all involved, there was good news to share. Chiquita’s masses were benign, and her prognosis was excellent. She is now healthy and surrounded by the love of her wonderful family – largely thanks to the support we receive from PetSmart Charities. Share Facebook TikTok Instagram
