5 reasons we love senior pets

They’re distinguished. They’re cute. They shine with silver in their fur. We adore senior pets. Often, we see seniors come to Humane Colorado after a lifetime in a loving home. These pets lived full lives until their elderly caregivers passed away, moved into assisted living, or faced other hardships that made it impossible for their humans to care for them anymore.

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month! Here’s a pawful of reasons we love our older friends.

1. Age brings wisdom

Senior animals have been doing this “pet” thing for a while now. Seniors are usually housetrained and may even know basic commands. While all pets are different, seniors are less likely to exhibit destructive behaviors more frequently associated with puppies and kittens such as chewing, scratching, jumping, etc.

2. Seniors are in no rush

Senior pets can teach us a thing or two about slowing down and enjoying every step in the grass, every sniff in the air, and every comfy napping spot. They help us slow down a bit, too.

3. Established personalities

We get more grounded in our personalities as we age. So do our pets! Young animals are still developing their personalities, whereas an older pet is a “what you see is what you get” vibe. It is important to note that shelter environments are stressful for most animals, including seniors, which can lead to shut-down or hyperactive responses. The behaviors exhibited in the shelter may change when the pet is in the home.

4. Companionship

Senior pets provide a unique pet experience. To be at the receiving end of their gentle affection is extra heartwarming because they are content just being by your side.

5. They still have a lot of life to live

The silver years are for enjoyment! They may live life on the slower side, but there is still plenty of joy to be had with a senior pet by your side. Many seniors still love enrichment activities like wilderness walks, wand toys, window perches, scent adventures (car rides with the windows down), and more.
