Adoption benefits

In 2024, we welcomed over 20,000 homeless pets into our shelters. Their journey home starts before they’re yours, ensuring their health, safety, and success while in the shelter. Explore Humane Colorado’s pre-adoption and post-adoption benefits.

Before their yours:
Pre-adoption services

Every animal we welcome into our care receives a general wellness exam and behavior assessment to determine their pre-adoption and in-shelter needs.

Every animal we care for is spayed or neutered if they are not already. This helps prevent disease and pet overpopulation. We also provide aftercare instructions to adopters.

Every animal receives species-relevant vaccinations, including the rabies vaccine (if age appropriate) before adoption.

Every pet’s unique dietary needs are met in-shelter and in their home, thank to our partnership with Hill’s Pet Nutrition. Equine and small pets also receive nutritious species-specific diets while in our care.

Every pet we adopt will have a microchip ID implanted if they do not already have one. The microchip will be registered to you at adoption. We currently use Home Again microchip IDs.

When their yours:
Post-adoption support

Adopters receive a complimentary wellness exam at any veterinary practice participating in the Connect for Care program. Connect for Care is good for 14 days after adoption to establish your pet with a local veterinarian.

Adopters receive a complimentary bag of Hill’s Science Diet, courtesy of Hill’s Pet Nutrition, to maintain a balanced, science-led diet in their new home. Keep the goodies coming by ordering through Hill’s. Add Humane Colorado as your shelter of choice at checkout. Each order support animals like your until they find their ideal home! If you decide to switch to another food brand, we recommend a slow transition to support your pet’s digestive health.

Every newly adopted dog from Humane Colorado receives a free Basic Hygiene package within 30 days of adoption from any of the 9 Denver Scenthound locations.

Adopters receive complimentary support if issues arise through the pet resource center and pet behavior helpline.
