Surrender Your Pet

Humane Colorado provides support and resources for pet surrender. Learn how to responsibly surrender your pet when facing difficult circumstances.

The Pet Surrender Process

There are many reasons people place their pets in our care. We pride ourselves on being judgement-free in the pet surrender process, understanding it is a difficult decision. Our team is here to help ease the process, providing compassionate assistance.

Before you make your decision, know there are resources available to help you keep your pet.

Thank you for trusting us to provide the care your pet needs.

Surrendering Your Pet to Humane Colorado

Our goal is to find a loving home for every healthy and safe animal that enters our care. If you decide to rehome your pet with Humane Colorado, we will take the time to learn as much as we can about the pet’s experience in your home and with other animals. We will also ask questions regarding your animal’s medical history.

We recommend scheduling an appointment if you are surrendering a dog.
Dog walk-ins will be accepted as capacity permits.

Please be prepared to share what you know and bring the following:

Our promise

We vow to respect your decision and treat you and your pet with compassion and empathy during this difficult time. As a socially conscious shelter, we are committed to providing the best possible outcomes for all animals through safe shelter, nourishment, and loving care to vulnerable companion animals in our community.

Wildlife and exotic pets

While we are a safe haven to animals from all walks of life, there are some species of wildlife and exotic pets we are not able to place because a shelter is not an ideal environment.

Surrender an Equine

The process to surrender a horse, donkey, or other equine works differently than cat, dog, and small mammal relinquishments. Please review the Harmony Equine Center criteria and fill out the form. A member of our team will be in touch.

Socially conscious sheltering

Humane Colorado is a Socially Conscious Shelter committed to creating the best possible outcomes for all animals. We provide safe shelter, nourishment, and loving care to vulnerable companion animals across our community.

As a Socially Conscious Shelter, Humane Colorado assesses the health and behavior of every animal in our care and makes appropriate treatment and placement decisions based on those assessments. We humanely euthanize animals who are suffering, whose health compromises their quality of life, or who may likely pose safety risks to people or other animals in the community.

We encourage you to explore all other available resources or rehoming options before deciding to surrender your pet. We are unable to provide ongoing updates on the status of individual animals in our care, nor can we guarantee the return of an animal to you if your situation changes.
