Adoptable working cats

Adopt a working cat from Humane Colorado

What is a working cat?

Working cats are cats that come to our shelters with temperaments and histories that may be better suited to an outdoor lifestyle and can be placed with caring owners. These working cats thrive when they have a job to do whether it be in a barn, stable or other outdoor setting.

To ensure the safety and health of these unique animals, adopters must provide daily food, shelter, and overall long-term care. Before placement, all working cats adopted from Humane Colorado receive spay/neuter surgery and all required age appropriate vaccinations.

Why adopt a working cat?

Adopting a working cat helps healthy cats who may not be suitable as a house pet, thrive in appropriate environments such as a barn, brewery, garden shed, or other suitable location. Not only will you get to enjoy watching these cats do their job and help keep rodents away, but you will also give them a much-needed home.

Socialization types

While these are the most common socialization types, behavior and socialization is a spectrum. Some of our working cats can be very friendly and social while others are more reserved and shy. Pay close attention to their body language for your and their safety and comfort.

If you want to adopt a working cat, please submit the required form: Working cat request form

Feral

A feral cat lives outdoors and has never been socialized to humans. This means they are not likely to enjoy the “luxuries” of indoor living.

Most feral cats are fearful of humans. They are not aggressive when left alone but may act with aggression if too much contact is attempted by a human when the cat does not have a visible escape route.

Semi-feral

A semi-feral cat has had some contact and experience with humans and has developed a comfort level with humans due to feeding, receiving medical care or similar contacts, but is unsuitable as an indoor pet.

Social

While social cats are more likely to seek out attention from humans and may allow petting on their terms, behavior can vary between individuals, and not all cats tolerate handling. Pay close attention to their body language for your and their safety and comfort.

Notice:

To reduce stressful interactions, we do not allow patrons to visit with our working cats in person. If you want to adopt a working cat, you MUST complete the request form first. We will respond to your submission within 24 to 48 hours Via email.

ADOPTION FEES ARE WAIVED FOR ALL WORKING CATS.
All working cats receive spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations and a rabies vaccination.
